Dear Vinny,
My wife and I recently purchased a large working ranch in a very rural area. We do not have any paved roads, just dirt. My wife insists on building a more formal road infrastructure and paving some of the main roads. Before investing in this project, I want to ensure this will add value to our property down the road. What are the benefits of taking on this project?

Dear Dirt Roads,
A good road system through your ranch will definitely add value, especially when it comes time to sell. I wouldn’t get too crazy with paving because of its expense, but investing in pavement around your infrastructure is always nice because it keeps the mud and dust down. You may also be able to mine the gravel for your roads on site, and the result could be a spring-fed or lined pond that will also add value at the end of the day.
Good luck and happy trails!
