My property has a very dense forest on it. In the past few years, there have been a lot of fires in my area. What should I do on a short-term and long-term basis to mitigate fire damage to my acreage?
Dear Dense Forest,
This is a great question and one that comes up often. While some fire is not a bad thing, landscape preparation can be made to minimize the damage. Several great fire mitigation companies in the West specialize in fire reduction and home defense strategies. I have seen implementation mainly focused on reducing the amount of fuel on the forest floor and trimming low-hanging branches. Removing the amount of fuel on the forest floor will also improve the overall health of the forest and can be visually pleasing, especially around structures.
