Dear Vinny,
I recently inherited agricultural land, but I currently live abroad. I don't plan to return, but I don't want to sell the land because I see it as a valuable investment. I'm not familiar with what goes into managing and maintaining this kind of property. How can I effectively manage and oversee the land from a distance? What are the biggest challenges I should anticipate? Given the distance, I want to ensure I take care of this property, but I need to figure out where to start.
Dear Abroad,
I would check to see if any management companies in your area could help you. I have also seen companies set up a network of cameras linked to a website, giving you 24-hour access to watch over the property from afar. If the above is not an option, it is worth talking with a neighbor who might be able to help watch your property. With that said, I would make the trip to the property in person to ensure expectations are set and hold whomever you hire accountable for watching over things.
